11.19.03 - Wisdom Teeth |
Posted by impulse - 11-20-03 02:20 - 0 comments |
So yeah,
Yesterday I got my wisdom teeth taken out. All four of them. I only got to keep two and a half since they had to cut one in half and another into so many pieces that they didn't even give it back to me. Here's how I remember it:
Went to the office with Mary. They made sure I hadn't eaten anything since the night before and asked if Mary was my responsible caregiver. Paid them $362.50 to inflict consentual bodily harm on me. Waited some minutes. Went into the room with Mary and nurse person. They sat me down and hooked me up all matrix like with eletro-pad monitoring thingies and blood pressure sleeve thing. Then we had usual pre-surgery smalltalk.. you know.. the kind you'd usually have in that situation. Then the doctor came in and said "Ok! Let's get this show on the road!" Then they kicked Mary out.
They asked me if I was afraid of needles and I said no, I'm all right. Then they stabbed me in the back of the left hand with a needle thingy and taped it to my arm and hand. I didn't really see it cause I didn't feel like looking. Then they put an oxygen thing over my nose. The last thing I remember is someone holding their hand under my chin.
While I was asleep, I think I remember hearing a saw or drill or something. Not really sure cause I was asleep. I didn't have any dreams.
Next thing I knew, I was awake and they were de-matrixing me. I couldn't feel my mouth at all. They let me sit in the chair for a minute and then had me stand up and walk to another room with a more comfy chair. Then Mary appeared. Then the nurse person told Mary a lot of things, and told me I wouldn't remember any of it. I only remembered some. Then Mary went away to get the car, and the nurse person put me in a wheelchair and rolled me downstairs to the waiting Mary and car.
We went to Walgreens to drop off my prescriptions. I was pretty much unaware of what they were for or how Mary got the papers or information to give to them. Then we went to Wendy's and Mary got me a frosty. She got a large, and said that if I couldn't finish it, then she'd have the rest. So, I removed the gauze that was in my mouth, but I'm not really sure when I realized it was there. It must have been when I first tried to speak after the surgery, but I don't distinctly remember it. Anyway, I couldn't feel my tongue at that point, so I had to use the mirror to spoon the frosty into my mouth. I dripped a lot (both frosty and blood). After I couldn't really take spooning stuff into my numb mouth, and after Mary realized that she didn't really want to have the rest of the frosty mixed with blood, we went back to Walgreens.
Apparently, when Mary went in to pick up the prescription, there was someone else who just had surgery waiting there as well, and this person threw up all over the floor. I'm kinda glad I wasn't there for that one. Mary came back with medicine and sprite and ginger ale (in case I had an upset stomach) and a very soft stuffed dog (Mary's cute). Then it was back to Mary's place.
I took the first bits of my medicine. Two kinds of painkillers and antibiotics. I got kind of frustrated cause I couldn't really drink the water to get the pills down cause my lip was numb, but Mary was helpful. She put on Monty Python and the Holy Grail for me. The made me happy, cause it was funny, and it put me in a better mood. I fell asleep for a little while too. When I woke up, the numbness was starting to weat off fof my lip, so Mary went off to 7-11 to get milk for the mashed potatoes she was going to make me. She also picked up a slurpee for me. So I ate that while she was cooking and cooling the mashed potatoes. They had to be cool, since at that point, hot foods were forbidden. Those were THE BEST potatoes I have ever eaten in my life. Hunger truly is the best spice. After I ate them, I started feeling much better. I took a couple naps after that I think. It was kind of a blur.
But I woke up in the morning and Mary made me scrambled eggs, since I was up for some light chewing. They were tasty too. I was feeling fine all day, really. Mary took good care of me, so I got better fast. Today for dinner I ate some Wendy's french fries, a frosty, and some pop tarts. Chewing doesn't hurt at all for me now, but it feels really weird, and I don't want to get food in the holes that the teeth left, so I'm still chewing carefully. I feel fine now though, there's no pain.
Thanks to everyone who wished me well, and a very special thanks to Mary for taking such good care of me.

10.13.03 - Long Weekend |
Posted by impulse - 10-13-03 23:50 - 0 comments |
So yeah...
This weekend was cool because it ended up being a 5 day weekend for me. Since I don't have classes on Friday or Tuesday, and Monday was Columbus Day, that makes 5 days of resting fun. Which I really needed since I had been working on various things for like two days straigh before this weekend. So here's how it went down:
Thursday: Class ended at around 1:00, played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City until Mary and Melinda came over. When they got here, we went to chicken lou's who didn't have anything to sell us except cholesterols. We ended up watching Grave of the Fireflies, which has lived up to its reputation as an immensely sad movie.
Friday: Woke up, ate, got ready. Went to Mary's. We went to her house and chilled for a bit while waiting for her friends Chris and JayJay (J.J.?). Apparently, JayJay got a new job and we were going to the 99 Restaurant and Pub to celebrate. So, I met them, and off we went to get food. When we got there the peoples were crowding into the parking lot waiting to get in, so we said fuck that, and went to Outback Steakhouse. We had a lot of good food, too much though. Then Chris took us on a walking tour of downtown Lowell. It was very informative and I passed the quiz at the end with flying colors. I am now an honorary member of their crew. Mary and I went back to her place and went to sleep.
Saturday: Woke up at 9:00 or so. Got ready and headed up to Nashua to see my sister play in a soccer tournament. The game was at 10:30. We watched her play, Mary was very excited to watch a soccer game, since she used to play. It got her soccer blood pumping again. When Kristi's team scored the only goal of the game, Mary seemed more ecstatic than the girls on the team, which was good because she was enjoying it. After the game and hanging out with my mom and Kristi for a bit, we headed to the mall. I ate a bilzzard and Mary got Fallen on dvd for her mom. We headed back to her place and called Melinda on the way, who met us there. We watched four or so episodes of Evangelion, then we went to Mary's mom's place because we said we would be there between 4 and 5 and it was about 4:30 when we finished Eva. So, we went there, and Mary's mom was asleep, so we got Dominos and ate it with her dad while watching the latter half of the Red Sox game. When it was over, Mary's mom was up, and we watch The Ghost and Mr. Chicked starring Don Knotts. It was a good movie for the time period it was made. After the movie, we were dead tired, so we went to back to Mary's and went to sleep.
Sunday: Woke up at like 8:00 for Kristi's second game of the tournament. Went back up to Nashua, only this time it was raining. Kristi's team lost the game, unfortunately. After the game, we went back and visited with them at their hotel room. We left (taking the stairs due to falling elevators) and went back to the mall for orange chicken speed eating. We rushed back to Mary's and took a small nap cause we were beat. Then we went to Kristi's afternoon game, again in the rain. They lost that one too, but I think they played a bit better. We then headed back to my place and hit massive traffic due to flooding and Red Sox fanatics. But, we made it in time for the 9:45 showing of Kill Bill with Ron and Yuko. Even with ordering our tickets online, we had to wait in line for the ticket printing machine, and then in a much longer line to have our tickets ripped. I've never seen so many people in that movie theater. The movie was really good though. It's worthy of my dvd collection. We walked back to my place and played some Tetris. Then it was late, so we slept.
Monday: Woke up late. Ate some breakfasts. Chilled for a bit, and played more Tetris and Dr. Mario. Flipped the channels and found True Lies, which we ended up watching most of. Master Chen came over, then Mary and I went out for a while. We walked up to Downtown Crossing, checking out some clothing stores on the way. Clothes shopping is not my strong point, but I looked at some stuff anyway. We took the T back home, and then watched some TV for a while. We also ate some dinner, pizza bites and chicken noodle stuff. Yum. Played some more Tetris and Dr. Mario, then it was time for Mary to go. I started writing this post, and you know how it turned out.
Tomorrow, I'm gonna work on the 8 queens problem so I can submit working code for my AI homework. Wednesday, I might go with ron to document his acquisition of his new car. Thursday is anime night with Mary and Melinda, and maybe her friend Jason. Then time for another weekend which has a slim chance of being as much fun and active as this one.
So yeah.....

9.23.03 - The King of Slack |
Posted by impulse - 09-28-03 20:26 - 0 comments |
... but laziness always pays off now.
I am the undisputed king of slacking off. Tomorrow I have a presentation due that constitutes 15% of my grade. I also have a test in social psychology. And instead of preparing for that stuff, I'm posting to tenmou and looking at slashdot. If eclip5e was half as good at slacking as I am, then right now we'd be watching Lone Wolf and Cub.
In other news, tomorrow I will have been together with Mary for half a year. It hardly seems like it's been that long. Time flies when you're having fun I guess. We haven't really had any problems at all either, so that's cool. And next month we're going to see Eddie Izzard. We've had tickets for quite some time. I had a dream about missing the show last night. I was supposed to meet Mary there, but she was running late doing something, and hurrying to get there on time. Then I looked at the tickets and realized I had gone to the theater an hour too late, so we missed the show. I was disappointed hard. But then I woke up and all was good. So yeah. I'm gonna go now and do something else cause it's better.

9.08.03 - Classtime again |
Posted by impulse - 09-8-03 19:05 - 0 comments |
So classes are starting up again. My first day is wednesday of this week. My first class meets at 6:00 PM and goes until 9:00 PM. Fun. I won't be bringing the book(s) to class because there are two really thick books listed for the course and they both cost more than $80 each. I'm going to find out if I absolutely need them before I buy them. The book for one of my other classes is $104. Fun. At least I know that this quarter will be better than the last one.

8.25.03 - Beach and Stuff |
Posted by impulse - 08-26-03 01:06 - 0 comments |
So yeah.. freedom is cool. On Thursday I woke up mad mad mad early and went to go get my final portfolio bound at gnomon copy. I woke up at 7:00ish and went with Yuko there so we could get it done right after they opened. I was sort of in a daze as it happened, partially because it was really early and partially because I couldn't believe it was actually over. It felt good to finally be holding the bound paper I had worked so hard on in my hands. It was weird, because it was like, wow, here's this big thick booklet type thing, and I created this out of nothing. It's kind of like the same feeling I got after I finally got my website up and running. So, with paper in hand, I purchased a prepaid mailer, got everything together, and handed it in. It was weird because when I got to my professor's office she was talking with someone, so she just took it from me without saying anything. Sort of anti-climactic. Anyway, I went home and slept for many an hour. Then began the funtimes.
I took the train on Thursday to meet Mary. She had been in Salem with her friend Kelly all day, and when I got to Lowell, they were both there waiting for me, because they had just gotten back. It was cool, cause I haven't had much of a chance to spend any time with Kelly, and she's like Mary's best friend. She's really nice and is a lot like Mary in many ways, so I'm glad I got a chance to get to know her a bit better. We all went to the mall and got foods, then went to Mary's and watched some TV. Then Kelly went home and Mary and I got some sleep for the big Friday that we've been planning for quite some time.
We woke up early and headed out for Hampton Beach, NH. The good thing about Lowell is that it's really close to cool places in NH, and close enough to Boston too. Traffic wasn't too bad, and the weather was nice. We got there and Mary showed me where she used to stay sometimes with her family. Then she showed me all the fun places there were. We went to the arcade and played Tapper and Skee-ball and air hockey. Then we went to the Time Machine, which is one of those places where they dress you up in olden times costumes and take your picture. We went for the 20s look. The picture came out really good, and I'll post it later. We ate at this place called the Whale's Tale, which had pretty good food. Then we played mini-golf and walked a little bit on the beach. It was kind of too hot to be walking around a lot, so we're gonna go back in a few weeks to do the beach thing and play laser tag too, which we didn't get to do.
All in all, it was a very good start to my freedom, and a good end for Mary's, she had to go back to work today. I'll post pics in my garrely later. |

8.21.03 - The End Has Come |
Posted by impulse - 08-21-03 08:04 - 2 comments |
This is finally it. The day I've been waiting for for three months. Right now it's 8:06am and I just got back from binding my final portfolio for middler year writing. It's finished and it looks and nice. In about an hour, I'm going to mailboxes etc. to pick up a prepaid mailer to hand in along with my final portfolio. My professor will be in her office at 9:00, and I'll be there shortly after that to rid myself of this evil once and for all.
It's been so long since I haven't had anything due, I barely even know what to do with myself. First thing I'm going to do when I get back is sleep (since I got up at 7:00 this morning to get the portfolio bound). That way it will all sink in. Then when I get up maybe I'll start playing Tenchu 2. Either that or work on other random crap that has piled up, like sending my video card in to be replaced/fixed. The fans on those things crap out hard. Once I am officially and totally free, I'll post again.

8.15.03 - Back from the Dead... Almost |
Posted by impulse - 08-15-03 20:28 - 0 comments |
Ok, so I haven't posted in like months. This is all due to my overwhelming schedule. It's not that my schedule is so bad, it's just that I've had to be working on stupid crap all the time. My middler year writing requirement paper has been killing me all quarter. It will all be over in less than a week though. The final draft and packet are due on Thursday, August 21st. Once the paper is in its final form, I'll be sure to squish it into one word document and throw it up here. My topic is MMORPGs like Everquest, and how they should be considered less like "games" and more like "virtual world browsers", since you can actually make a living off of them. I personally don't think it's a very strong paper, but it seems to be tricking my professor well enough, since my second draft had a projected grade of B/B+. Like I said, once it's done, I'll slap it up here and let everyone tear it apart. Also, once I'm finally done with this hellish quarter, I'll try to get back into a rhythm of posting, since I'll have more time.

Where are you?
we could never find you so easily...
Why do you change?
i thought you would not change.
Fact is a fact.
you are not supposed to change.
But you do...
or maybe some of us abuse you.
Those with authority hide or put costume on you.
rest of us can't really see you.
What are you then?
Fact...
simple, but we live without it...

Final Design |
Posted by Yuko - 06-5-03 22:41 - 5 comments |
This is what I made for my final project for fashion design class. This one-fits-all sized piece turned out to be a fun project. The gathers, sleeves, and waist are adjustible! I wanted to make something that was adjustible, and give the wearer a choice of how she wants to wear--rather than clothes wearing the person. It definitely has that loungy feminine '20s look, but can be contemporarily worn with a pair of slacks and high heels for an active urban look! |

5.21.03 - Morning Battle |
Posted by impulse - 05-21-03 12:56 - 0 comments |
This morning I awoke to my first alarm clock. 7:15 A.M. Turned it off, went back to sleep. Next alarm went off. 7:30 A.M. Turned it off. Next alarm, this time the cell phone. 7:40 A.M. Hit snooze, which lasts for 6 minutes. So far, this is a normal morning.
Next alarm: 7:43 A.M. It wasn't a regular alarm though. This one went BZZZZZ along the ceiling and then dropped onto my chest and stopped. It was big, I could feel it thump through my blanket. Sleep faded from my brain as I tried to trap it in my blanket with a lightning quick folding motion. This beast was too quick for my ninja skills though, it was a formidable foe indeed. I heard it buzzing, and looked to locate the sound. It was a giant bee, trying to escape through the closed window, no doubt terrified by my blanket attack. 7:44 A.M. I was totally awake and in full on mortal combat mode at this point. I thought quickly, and used my stuffed cat to stun the great beast. It was not enough to slay it though. It fell to the windowsill and crawled about angrily. My thoughts turned to my trusty metal stick, and I went to retrieve my weapon without getting out of bed, but the bee must have used some kind of telekinetic bee-power, because the stick fell just as my fingers touched it. Knowing that if I got out of bed to get the stick it would leave the bee an opening to escape and wreak havoc in the apartment proper, I needed another weapon fast. 7:45 A.M. Improvising, I detached the plastic blind adjusting stick. As the bee still crawled about on the windowsill, no doubt weakened by its last ditch telekinetic attack, I aimed my makeshift weapon and thrust! A miss! The bee took flight for a moment, knowing that its life might soon come to an end, and landed again on the windowsill. I aimed again, this time for its head, and thrust once more! The blow connected with the great beast's head, crushing it against the corner of the window and the sill. The last bits of life twitched out of the corpse, and I returned my weapon to its rightful place in the blind assembly. 7:46 A.M. My cell phone alarm went off for the last time for the morning, and I got up for the day.
You know it's gonna be a good day when you make your first kill of the day in three minutes and before you even get up.

4.14.03 - 3 out of 15 minutes ought to suit you |
Posted by impulse - 04-14-03 18:25 - 2 comments |
Oops, messed up the posting format a bit over the last two posts. Oh well.
This past Sunday I went to the MFA with mary. It was cool, I took a bunch of pictures for my mom, so she can write a paper on her reaction to being there, which she wasn't.. but she's done homework assignments for me before, so now we're even. Oh yeah, and on Saturday mary got me a "Boot Mill" from this place near her high school. That shit ruled. It's a bacon egg and cheese sandwich, only it has potato in it too. You can get sausage or ham or bacon or any combination of the three. I got bacon. Good, good shit. We also went to Best Buy to drop off her stereo to get fixed. I grabbed Final Fantasy Origins, since we were in New Hampshire and there was no sales tax. We also stopped in the mall near there and mary finally found Six String Samurai on dvd, which she's been looking for for a while. Then we picked up some kickass pizza from this place called Espresso Pizza and brought it to mary's mom's place and ate it and mary, her mom, and I played trivial pursuit for a long time. It was mad fun. Good, good weekend.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.... |
Posted by impulse - 04-5-03 13:15 - 0 comments |
Woot!
Today I got an email from the people over at Sony Online Entertainment. I've been accepted for the third stage in Star Wars Galaxies beta test! It's not really a big thing since like 5000 people get to be in beta 3, but it still feels good to be part of something semi-exclusive. I'm sure a lot more than 5000 people signed up to do the beta test. Anyway, I have to complete the registration and stuff, which I'll probably do tomorrow or the next day, since today I'm hanging out with mary and going to see the Cowboy Bebop movie with everyone tonight. Kickass!
Once I start playing the beta test, I wish I could post stuff here about the game, but I have to sign a non-disclosure agreement. But, I read that the NDA gets lifted after a certain amount of time, so I'll be posting stuff here about it when that happens.

When the invasion of the Monkeys comes... |
Posted by impulse - 03-30-03 21:31 - 0 comments |
Hmm.. haven't posted in almost a month.
The story thus far:
- Cowboy Bebop with Tom, Mel, and Mary is now a weekly thing (Wednesdays). When that's over, Trigun? Escaflowne? Jubei-chan? Who knows?
- Been hanging out and talking with Mary more. Fantastic times. Much more fantastical times to come.
- Work is same old same old. Need to work on getting my summer schedule squared away, so I can have something to look forward to besides making boxes and preparing 1658 GPS receiver bundles.
Story time:
Last night Tom, Mel, Mary and I went to go see Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) since they re-released it in the theater due to it winning the Oscar for best animated picture.
Now, if you've ever seen this movie, you know it's kind of surreal, especially since the whole bath house is massive with tons of crazy passages. This makes what happened after the movie ended even more freakish.
We left the theater and exited through a door most people weren't using, only to emerge in a place that seemed like it was outside, but upon looking up you realized there was a roof over your head. As the door closed and locked behind us, we realized this was probably not the best way out. We proceeded along what looked like a good way to go, only to come upon two security guards at a desk who told us we had to go back the way we came and that "You have to pay to exit this way". We followed the Exit signs through this crazy labyrinth of what seemed to be some administration building of Harvard Medical center. We went down some old looking stairs and emerged outside like a block from the movie theater entrance. Strange stuff. I think that whole building complex would make a crazy first person shooter level.

thoughts~via NYC |
Posted by Yuko - 03-27-03 22:24 - 0 comments |
As always, I enjoyed my trip to NYC. The city is always so energetic, jumble of different things and people, wide range of norm--or little norm, and everything seem to be "in your face." The last thing I just said, "everything seems to be in your face," I specially saw that through this trip--taken just 3 days after the US began bombing Baghdad.
Coming across a pro-war crowd--yelling "U.S.A! U.S.A!" as if cheering for a Olympic team,
having two solders with guns in corner of my eyes in every other subway stations,
feeling passive standing with museum pamphlets as I enviously stare those with protest posters,
meanwhile
Seeing people hurrying through Prada to Fendi to Tiffany like shops along the 5th Avenue and in Soho,
waiting in a loooong line in front of Picasso and Matisse exhibit--assured profit project for museums,
passing by a used paper cup with some change on the ground next to a drummer with 4 plastic buckets,
and somehow disappointed in not feeling so emotional as I though I would be in visiting Ground Zero.
All these little (or large) things made me think about the speed of the city--not necessary fast nor slow, and the complicatedness--or hypocrisy-- of the capitalism and democracy. Actually I didn't think much. They were all there, a reality visible in the city--all in your face.
